Smokey

So this week we were treated to an episode that opened with a flashback.  I guess there is so little plot to cover on the island that we must know more and more backstory about the characters.   But did Eko’s flashbacks really add to the story? OK, he’s a killer we got that already.  OK, he’s pretending to be a priest, we got that too.  The “scary” CGI smoke monster beating him to a pulp was a nice touch.  Not the greatest special effect, but hey, it’s a TV show.  Now you may be saying, “Wow, something actually happened in this episode.  You are wrong Tyler, things do happen”.  Well you would be wrong to say that. I guarantee he will be back, Obi Wan in Empire Strikes back style, popping up all over the island.  We aren’t falling for his “death”, lost producers.

Which brings me to my 2 main gripes for the producers of Lost about this episode:

 1. Introducing new characters.  Are you freaking joking me?  There are at least 30 characters on the show already with issues that haven’t been resolved or developed yet, and you are introducing new characters.  Are we going to have flashbacks for them now too?  For the love of God, stop with the characters and start wrapping some of these storylines up.

2. “Fall” Season Finale next week?  WTF!?!?  Haven’t there only been 4 episodes since the last season finale.  Nothing has even happened with the “cliffhangars” from last time?  Does this make sense to anyone?  Who were the guys listening to the radio in the igloo?  Who was that chick that got the phone call at the end?  4 episodes and you are taking a break?  Other shows are able to string together a season of shows, what makes Lost so special?  Get back to work and start pumping out some real shows that tie up some of the 500 loose ends.

“What has been lost, can never again be found.” After watching this week’s ep, I think we can put all argument aside (losties and anti-losties both) and realize that the show is now, and always has been, completely adrift. For the love of God, why did they introduce the “tailies”?? (Go ahead Lost gurus and tell me that I am not sophisticated enough to know how the tailies impacted the show, or that the 15 producers will eventually reveal the importance of the tailies.) All of the Tailies except Bernard have been killed off. Their flashbacks:now pointless. So, it begs the question: how can any sane human get excited for future eps or future flashbacks when you have to know that with about a legitimate 75% chance they are completely pointless?? And Tyler, great point…”the fall season finale”??piss on my head and tell me its raining, bang my wife and tell me she still loves me, steal my money and tell me you are still my friend…a “fall” season finale??? *UCK OFF ABC. Why don’t you admit you are too damn cheap to order more than 24 episodes. I’ve got an idea, order 28. Then you could play the other 4 over the next months and take Christmas off…most people don’t mind that anyways. I have got a quick comment abou JJ Abrams (that I will expand on in the future): He is not creative. If you look at his work, all of it has major similarities: all of his shows are somehow rip-offs of movies and/or other tv shows and to compensate for this, he makes the initial plots soooooo far-fetched that he eventually is stuck being unable to deliver. He is sophmoric at best. He is a rip-off. He is NOT creative. He reminds me of the hippie artist that smokes dope and thinks his work is “ground breaking” when they are really sub-par but don’t know it. If you are an Abrams fan, I hope someone sodomizes you. Sorry to post again…however, I took a look at the tv.com lost boards and found the following post. If this doesn’t demonstrate the amount of mental illness that exists in this country, I dont know what does…
(COPIED AND PASTED POST BEGINS NOW)It seems to me that the show is structured like this-
Take a piece of paper. Draw a line cutting that piece in half. Then cut opne of those halves in half. Then cut one of those halves in half. And once more, cut one of those halves in half. Making the smallest section (if math serves) 1/16th the size of the original paper.
So, the first season was the smallest section, one of the 1/16th size spaces. That was the fusies.
Then in season two, we met the other 1/16th size space, the tailies. Together they learned to integrate themselves, becoming a larger whole made up of the two halves. 1/16th + 1/16th became 1/8th of the whole picture.
Now, in season three, the combined 1/8th has met up with the others - the opposing 1/8th size space. This season will be about them coming into conflict, ultimately coming together, integrating and becoming a larger whole. 1/8+ 1/8 becoming 1/4.
Next season will undoubtedly revolve around that group coming into conflict with THEIR opposing 1/4 piece (penelope’s people? possibly?) They will conflict, integrate, and become 1/2 of the puzzle.
And in season 5 (they did originally say they had a five season plan, right?) that group will meet THEIR opposing force, the final 1/2 size piece of the puzzle, until they ultimately resolve into a unified whole. For the record, my guess is that the final opposing force will be the island itself. But that’s just a guess.
The point being that the show seems very much structured around opposites coming into conflict, and each season the picture keeps pulling back and becoming bigger, not unlike that shot of where the fuselage and tail sections landed in relationship to the suburb of Othersville in the opening of 3.1
The shows totally resolved around opposites. White/black, good/evil, Science/Faith, Crazy/insane, insane, crazy, I say Hussein, you say Shady, …..
I’m sorry, I slipped into eminem there for a moment, didn’t I….

Anyway… Season 1 was Us (the survivors)

Season 2 was Us versus Ourselves (survivors against survivors)

Season 3 is Us versus Them (survivors against the Others)

Season 4 (my guess) is going to be Islanders versus the outside world

Season 5, Humanity versus the Island.

That’s all just my personal theory, anyway.
(POST ENDS HERE)
Man, ABC has created a cult…

I Believe the producers/writers are winging the story as they go, with the eath of Eko the meaning the trascendance of season 2 was pointless. The tail survivors were just fluff to the whole story.

The main story of LOST seems to be nothing in concrete, there are a lot of characters and still they introduce new ones, and most importantly none of the questions about the story have being answered yet.
LOST is quicky becoming boring and pointless.

LOST has lost it

Probably the story will go something like this:
- Introduce a dozen more characters, do a good handful of flashbacks to tell their background story, kill a couple of them along the way.
- Poke more questions to the story and dont bother ever touching the subject again.
*A nigerian small plane crash in the island sometwhere in the south pacific
* Libby in the mental hospital with Hurley
* Polar bears
* Walt being so special
* polar bears and horses on the island
* the guys in alaska and the woman thas was notified about the perturbance caused by the hatch implosion
* The 4 toe statue
* The second Island
etc.

I hve the suspicion that the identity of the man with the eye patch will not be revealed and will just be forgotten

Lost has become a joke that presents more and more questions and answers none.

I quit watching Lost two weeks ago. I couldn’t take the slow downward spiral into more unanswered questions and stupid sobplots. They took something new and different and turned it into crap.

For the first time since it began I did not watch Lost last week. I did read the storyline on the boards. I don’t understand why they would bring Echo into the show and kill him off before his story was finished. Why foe instance di it become his mission to punch in the numbers? I can see now that they will continue to rotate in new characters and do away with them for dramatic effect. Imagine what will happen as the retings decline and the main stars get other offers, it won’t be long before Jack, Kate or Locke gets killed off.

I have a great idea for the producers/ABC! After your hiatus you should turn Lost into a dramatic version of Fantasy Island. Each episode 2-3 new characters are introduced and their story is told in one episode. Then they dissapear(Desmond) or are killed off(Echo). The permanant cast will have smaller roles and will mainly be seen when they interact with the guest stars for that episode.

Don’t get me wrong, I am very sad at the death of Lost, it could have been one of the best TV shows of all time but I will not give any more of my time to it. I can tell that it will only become more frustrating and confusing to watch.

Dude, you may want to watch the show a little more closely before commenting on it. The chick that got the phone call was Desmond’s Girlfriend.

I agree that the show hasn’t been giving up much in the way of answers, but you discredit yoruself by not having your facts right.

No doubt!! my buddy and I have been ranting about these things for a while.

Count me among the duped.

Too many characters, and worse, I don’t CARE about the new ones. Why? B/c if you don’t show any ability to move the rest of the characters forward or show us anything NEW about them, why should I invest in caring about any NEW person!?!?!?!

Horrible.

and Jim, I agree…in fact, this season has been such a yawner I actually fell asleep midway through a few epi’s. But I’m old and that was bound to happen. nonetheless…

why introduce the tailenders (each with a more compelling story potentially than Kate or Jack or Hurley or Clare…YAWNNNNN!!!) when you just kill them off??

Libby had good potential…her in the “hospital” with hurley? and in Des’ flashback? all potentially cool angles.

Eko? most complex and conflicted character on the show.

Even the despised AnaL. I thought she was a great strong female character with a pretty good backstory too.

meanwhile, Kate has become a pussycat. Jack remains a one-dimensional stalker, and whatever happened to claire’s baby? or Walt?? they were SOOOOO important in previous seasons….now they’re not? did I miss something???

Seriously…glad I can rant flame free here. The show is drifting badly and I gotta say I’m not sure I’ll care enough come Feb 7 to make it “appointment television”.

I totally agree with questioning the wisdom of introducing two new characters when the story arcs of the existing characters haven’t been resolved yet. When I first heard them speak their first lines, I reacted like I was Mike Nelson on Mystery Science Theater 3000– I responded: “And you are?”

The new dude asked: “Who are the Others?” WTF?!?!?!?!? Where the fuck have you been the last 2 1/2 seasons?????????? I know you were undeveloped but for crying out loud, it’s not like you just washed up ashore last week!!!!!!!!!!!

Now the show will not be on until February. Bold move there, producers. What percent of your viewers will be watching Criminal Minds instead of your return episode?

Outahere!

great to find your blog. I feel like the rest of you. we are being played with.

I remember when 24 was during its first season. they only created 12 episodes at first when it became a hit they added 12 more. to make it exciting they had one main character become a mole. yet when you look back at the previous episodes there were so many problems that now emerged.
this is the problem with tv. you cant write 3 seasons because you dont know if it will make it past 1.
my point is even if they do answer some questions it will never fit perfectly which will just piss us off.
Stop watching now.

To everyone:
Its seems that everyone here has completely missed the point that LOST is, and always has been, just ONE GIANT MIND FUCK. To everyone who thinks that there will be some awesome explanation, this show is designed to mind fuck the retarded for 10 years while going around in circles. I agree, the 1st season might have been legitimate but anything more has just been BS. The only legitimacy this show could have had is as a mini-series.

Not to mention the fact that for 2 entire seasons, the hopes of the viewers have been pushed expertly in the direction of Jack and Kate being together - the deferred gratification, her back story’s implications for loving Jack, their shared interests, their phenomenally written chemistry. I don’t watch this show for romance, but having Kate “love” Sawyer is inconsistent and inconsiderate of your audience - and a quick way to get the majority of your audience to stop watching your show.

Like I am seriously considering. And I’m pretty upset about it. I really loved this show.

The biggest problem with Lost is that it was successful and that the writers/creators have more devotion to making money and not something creatively awesome. Once the show became a hit JJ Abrams moved on to other projects and left it in the hands of people who, presumedly want to milk out their cushy writing/producing gigs for as long as possible. Someone else in the comments said that this show would have only worked as a mini-series and I, to a certain extent, think he or she is right.

The Lost that was originally presented was attractive because we the viewers perceived that the show was all interconnected and that something as random as a plane crash was somehow pre-destined; that each passenger was brought together, not by chance but, by some divine action that will drastically alter the world we live in for the better.

The illusion of that is now gone, the show had gone from a steady build of a potentially awesome story to that of tired, stereotypical interactions of a worn-out cast. Kate & Sawyer? Endless backstories? Introducing characters just to kill them off? No resolution to ANY story arcs? Lost certainly sucks and that is depressing because I had so much passion for the show for so long.

The only way Lost could have been great is if it was initially pitched as a show that needed 4 seasons - no more, no less. Than the writers could have planned out and presented a cohesive vision that was paced well, almost like a very long, detailed movie that attract a devoted and passionate group of fans. After the show was a success they could literally guarantee their job security by coming up with a similar show to follow after Lost was completed that would have a similar feel and appeal to its rabid fan-base. Thoughts?

thanks for creating this site. I created http://www.islostnewthisweek.com last year because i was pretty pissed at the show. My reasons for hating lost have grown. It pretty much sucks in every possible way. I mean, i loved it at first, but once i figured out the show was about how many f*cking mysteries you can introduce without explaining a single one of them, i pretty much made up my mind that lost sux. I wont be watching a single new episode, thats for sure. Keep up the good work and spread the word!

rez! Thanks for that site!!! (the “islostnew…”)

My disdain for LOST began last year when I’d tune in Wed evening only to find it’s a repeat…again!?!?! WTF?

Looking back, that broadcast pattern was a clear indication they’d become more interested in milking the cow than in forwarding the story.

As I’ve mentioned elsewhere, I only think LOST sucks b/c I care. I liked it. It was good. Then it faltered, and has now really become a mess. I’m beginning to be merely ambivalent about the show, which is should be considered a worse fate for a program than ‘hate’.

Yes, we all know how bad the show is getting. And we still keep the hope going that at some point its all going to make sense. Maybe it will, maybe it won’t. I myself have thought many times that I couldn’t take it any longer, and I couldn’t watch it anymore. But I still do. And I still love it deep down. It’s this nice little love/hate relationship. Buy my question is, if you care this much, and hate it this much…. why not just stop watching?

And then I think- why can’t any of these people stop watching it?
its kinda scary
