The Start of Season 3 – Again
So I tuned in to watch the much hyped return of Lost (with some sense of dread I might add) and I find some douchebag recapping the whole series so far. OK, the show is now on an hour later, mental note. The real show picked up with – you guessed it – a flashback of Dr. One Expression. I can’t think of the character’s name right now, but since she always has the same expression on her face, that name will suffice. We were then treated to all the standard Lost fare: lots of yelling, a chase with shaky camerawork, bad guys that can’t shoot the broadside of a barn, and plenty staring. Ah, it’s great to be back. I won’t recap the whole episode but there were a few things that struck me.
First, I think the dude in the techno music isolation chamber was a clever metaphor by the producers to show what they think of the Lost viewers; drooling idiots staring at the flashing images on the screen. I couldn’t help feel a kindred bond with what the poor lad was going through.
Second, since when do they have stealth busses that go 150 mph? When Dr. One Expresssion’s ex-husband gets tagged by the bus, no one hears it coming and seriously, that thing is going at least 90 mph. I don’t know about you, but every bus I have seen, you can hear it coming at least a block away. It’s nice to know that Lost isn’t afraid to blatantly rip off scenes from a movie.
All in all, it was an anti-climatic return. At one point, I had flipped around during the commercials and found myself watching Future Cars on the Discovery Channel for about 10 minutes and forgot about Lost. When I turned back, I hadn’t missed anything. As usual.

I have to agree on all counts. The Clockwork Orange / The Prisoner scene was just so f*ckin corny I couldn’t believe it. And the chick with the slingshot, ARE YOU KIDDING ME?? I couldn’t care less about her or her boyfriend who no doubt will be dead in a couple more episodes anyway.
The best is when Ben wakes up right in the middle of surgery and asks for a moment alone with Juliet. Of course Jack is like “sure buddy, take as much time as you need” instead of the obvious “why don’t you tell me where the f*ck we are or else I’ll slice your spine in two..”.
It’s only in the context of figuring out what’s going on with Smokey and The Statue and Dharma that I can care in the slightest whether Kate screws Sawyer or Jack is depressed about being a rock star neurosurgeon. It’s clear they have no explanation for any of the supernatural stuff so they’re going 100% soap-opera. Too bad, a lame explanation would be better than nothign.
rock star neurosurgeon…excellent!
Just found this site. Thank god.
me too!
*sigh* I really loved this show up until this season. For me the “jump the shark” moment was watching Sawyer (who up until this point was slick as s**t, gangsta lean) get excited about scoring a fish biscuit. Too many useless characters (I don’t need to know so much about the others, & the lady who plays Juliette is particularly dull). Too much hand wringing & forced drama (the Kate/Sawyer/Jack love triangle- gag me). Too much time ignoring the really interesting characters (Locke & Hurley to name a couple). When they got to the part with the Clockwork Orange/Rave torture chamber I actually laughed out loud at how completely stupid & derivative it was. Now next week we get to look forward to the big, action filled attempt to rescue Jack- yippee. This show has gotten so far away from what made it great- wonderful characterization, that I don’t see any way for it to recover.
juliet always has on her poker face it never changes happy or sad it always has that wry grin . why did sawyer leave the BOAT! how fucking stupid can you get ! and then let the only sorce of information go with out questioning him! I think it would have been better if danny had shot them all
great call on the brainwashing scene being analogous to US!!! great…fucking…call!
also, interesting you noted the bus scene as well. I immediately thought “they ripped that off of nip/tuck”…the season that JUST AIRED LAST FALL!!! in that scene, sean is banging this young chick, when he says he can’t be with her, the chick goes crazy and threatens to tell his wife. she rants and rave. and as she’s yelling at him she stumble backwards into the street and into the path of an on-coming stealth bus. the scene was exactly the same. total rip-off.
Oh man, I totally forgot about that nip/tuck scene. That even looked like the same street in Florida they filmed it on!
Great post Tyler.
Thanks for taking the bullet for all of us on this episode.
I tried to watch but, half way through I decided that I just didn’t care enough to miss another minute of sleep.
I mean seriously a Juliet flashback. Is everyone on the show going to get one now?
BTW it’s curious to note how much later Lost had thier “premiere.” I think they were trying to avoid something. hmmm?
Nice to know ABC has sooo much faith in Lost it won’t go head to head with American Idol.
1. I turned on ABC at around 9:30 and saw these two total douche bags recapping Lost. This had to have been the most bourgeois television event that I have ever seen. It smacked of pompousness. I was embarrassed for these two. The looked like to pedophiles with their shitty grins and just bullshit comments.
2. I watched Lost from the openning segment untill the second commercial break (which began at a whopping 12 after or so). I then turned on the Military Channel and watched a black and white documentary on WWI that I have seen before. I swear on the bible that I actually forget Lost was on. I turned Lost back on at about 10:50, watched about 2 minutes, turned the Military Channel back on.
3. Watched the previews for next week: “the best episode of the best season”, “it will take your breath away,”…whatever…it basically showed the other survivors going BACK AGAIN to confront the “Others”. Didn’t we see this last season several times?
4. Jack is a fag. He acts like a middle school kid in love. Wait, I take that back. I think even most middle school kids would have told Kate to F-off and then rip Ben’s insides to shit and stab all the other “others in the room”
5. Lost DIDN’T EVEN WIN THE 10 PM HOUR! IT HAD ONLY 10 MILLION VIEWERS (thats less than Law and Order:Criminal Intent)
wow…just checked the ratings. amazing they didn’t even win the 10:00pm slot. quote from marc berman at mediaweek.com (http://www.mediaweek.com/mw/newsletters/proginsider/index.jsp) “Although the cancellation bells will certainly not be ringing anytime soon, Lost is a classic example of a show mishandled by its network.”

Wow. That episode was horrible. All of the characters don’t make sense.
I think the writers have zero social skills and don’t understand people at all, which means that their characters and interactions will be completely unrealistic.
Anyone with a good amount of social intelligence will dislike Lost because the character interactions are ludicrous. However, those with little social intelligence (huge nerds) will love it because it won’t seem so utterly unrealistic to them.
Okay, we’ve been watching Lost since the beginning. The first season was great. But we knew something was up when they ended the finale with the cliffhanger being the hatch and not Walt being taken away … you gotta be kidding! This was the first signal that Lost cared more about their stupid plots than their intriguing (at least at first) characters.
We waited three months for what we got Feb. 7? Oh, so exciting (yes that’s sarcasm) and then right into five minutes (yes you heard right), there’s a commercial??!! Five minutes later, another commercial!! And it never ended. Figuring it, the show could not have been more than 35 min. long.
Anyway. Kate and Dr. One Expression: Cry, cry, cry. Jack and Sawyer: yell, yell, yell. By the way Dr. One Expression has a name … they stole it from the famous doctor from Grey’s Anatomy, Dr. Burke. We could not believe it! Total rip-off!
This was one of the most boring, unrealistic, stupid episodes we have seen!
The sling-shot scene was the biggest laugh we’ve had in quite awhile!
Now … I wonder who will get pregnant next … and will Jack or Sawyer hook up with Kate or Juliet — or maybe, Charlie will be with Claire, or will he pick Sun instead or will it be Nikki? My, oh my, what a soap opera!! Who cares!!??
AC, you nailed it. They care more about the lame plot devices than the characters now. The characters were the best part of the show at the beginning.
The shocking getting-hit-by-a-bus scene was actually a direct rip-off of the ending of an episode from season one of Felicity (http://www.televisionwithoutpity.com/articles/content/a3832/index-7.html) which aired 1999.02.09. (Final Destination was released in 2000.)
I’ve been $#itting on Lost since the start of Season 2, and I’m glad to see that I’m not the only one.
Coming back out of a break with a flashback episode about another throwaway character we’ve just met… bull$#it. Seems like that research company name was supposed to be important — Mitelos Concern or something — probably an anagram for WHO GIVES A $#IT.
“Lost isn’t afraid to blatantly rip off scenes from a movie” – Funny because I immediately flashed in my mind to that scene in Final Destination. On the other hand, I can tell you that the buses here in Hawaii, like they used to film that scene, are pretty stealthy like that and often are careening down the street, seemingly out of control.
“bad guys that can’t shoot the broadside of a barn” – This is also very funny because I laughed out loud when one of the bad guys, after not being able to hit the broadside of a barn manages to shoot the walkie talkie out of Kate’s hand. Outstanding.
I guess my main realization was that compared to my expectation going in, I didn’t think the episode was as bad as I was sure it would be. And therein lies the problem, at this point, I truly have set the bar that low.
Article in Entertainment Weekly…Matt Fox says to viewers who complain about the show (and have stopped watching)…”good riddance”.
The article also takes the opportunity to remind everyone how smart the show is and that if you can’t follow the “complexity” of the show, apparently you’re an idiot. No, they didn’t say idiot, they said it takes “commitment”. And apparently many of the fabled secrets won’t be answered until season 4 or 5.
(the quotes are direct…did he really say ‘good riddance’ to the 4m+ viewers who stopped watching??? and do they really think the 19% drop in viewership was due to people not being ‘committed enough’ or able to follow the chaotic storylines?)
One interesting tid bit, LOST producers say the story is just a bit more than 1/2 way over. Epi 54 aired last Wed., they say there are only 100 episodes to the story – if they get their way.
I doubt the show will last that long at this rate. I’m still willing to play along and watch it (at least during commercials on Discovery Channel) for now, but I can’t see myslelf making it through a craptacular 4th season (who does Kate love- Sawyer, Jack or Midnight the mystery pony? BARF!) Plus, how do you need to be smart to watch this show? How do you need to be smart to watch ANYTHING on TV?! Yes, Battlestar Galacitca fans- I’m talking to you too! They don’t call it the “idiot box” for nothing you know…
i am actually looking forward to lost episodes where the show starts with a scene where a character says nothing, then there is a flashback to their past, where also the character says nothing, then there is a flashback further. then there is a commercial break, then there is another character, who says maybe two words that remind him / her of.. then a flashback etc.
the Bold & The Beautiful is More Entertaining, but frighteningly similar.
The Ludovico Tecnique scene in this episode was beyond absurd. I have always hated this show, my wife has always loved it & my bitching about it has become a point of contention. I know longer pick it apart out loud as I watch to keep the peace, but I do call out, “Flashback!” just one second before they cut to one; I am right about 90% of the time. It is very easy to predict a flashback in Lost, either a prolonged stare or a direct question pertaining to plot immediately preceeds one. Sometimes though (the other 10%) the question is intterupted by either a major action sequence or a commercial. On another note, I bet you anything they will find Mulder & Scully locked up on the island in a later season, I’ve never been more sure of anything in my entire life.
Yes, and 90% of that remaining 10% the interruption is a commercial.
“bet you anything they will find Mulder & Scully locked up on the island”
the as yet unidentified ‘adam and eve’ from the cave in season 1?
“the as yet unidentified ‘adam and eve’ from the cave in season 1?”
Man, I had completely forgotten about that whole plot point. Just another good example of what’s wrong with this show.
Thank God I found this sight, now I can stop fighting with my fiancee (who of course, LOVES the show) by bringing this stuff up to her!
did they have 4 toes?
Nico,
“How do you need to be smart to watch ANYTHING on TV?! Yes, Battlestar Galacitca fans- I’m talking to you too! They don’t call it the “idiot box” for nothing you know… ”
THANK YOU. I’ve ranted about it here before, but give me a friggin’ break, people. You’d think the show was presenting a workable strategy for colonizing Mars the way some people carry on about how “smart” it is. NO. IT. ISN’T. In fact, it’s quite bloody dumb. There’s always been an element of implausibility on the show. It started from the very first minutes, where the natural instinct in humans, no matter how dazed they are after a plane crash, would have been “get the hell away from the flaming wreck of twisted steel filled with highly combustable liquids.” At that point, I was overlooking little things like that because the show and the characters were interesting and compelling. Now they’re just absurd along the lines of daytime soap operas.
As for Matthew Fox, he’s an employee of the show. He knows who puts his food on the table, so it’s not like he has much of a choice in interviews other than to offer continuing praise. Regardless of what he thinks personally, he’s not exactly in a position to say “the show sucks. I’m just in it for the cash.”
“where the natural instinct in humans, no matter how dazed they are after a plane crash, would have been “get the hell away from the flaming wreck of twisted steel filled with highly combustable liquids.”
no doubt.
nah, M. Fox obviously can’t slam the show, but his sentiment (and that of the producers?) is if you’re not smart enough to follow the show, ‘good riddance’. to which, you, me, and half the folks here have said “smart enough? for this crap???”.
Oh, I definitely think there’s a kind of elitist disregard for the audience in that sense. The writers have managed to do the nearly impossible – kowtowing to half the audience by delivering the cheap drama with a short-term payoff while completely dismissing widely-held complaints as unfair or ignorant. Judging from the comments here, many of which are quite thorough and intelligent, this is hardly the case.
I know critics, especially the pros, can often be full of it, but listening and learning from what people have to say about your work does serve a purpose.
I absolutely agree. I’ve said here (and on the actual fan boards) before that the supporters of the show, including producers, seemingly refuse to not only listen to legitimate criticisms, but they fail to acknowledge actual facts.
ratings from the 2/14 show were at 12.4m. down from around 14.2 the previous week, which was the mid-season premier. THAT show was down from 19.1m the same time last year. and if I remeber, LOST topped out at around 22m during the last epis of season I and beginning of season II. those are facts. fewer people are watching and it’s nearly a 50% drop in less than 2 years. that’s not good no matter how you spin it.
You hate lost yet you still watch it and then write your feelings on here?
That is fucking sad.
not as sad as not being able to read. : ( not sure anyone here explicitly said they ‘hate’ LOST.
something else that’s sad: thinking the show is good (apparently) yet seeking out websites titled ‘why lost sucks’. that sort of self-flagellant behavior isn’t good. start taking your meds again before you hurt yourself.
Haha you fool. I feel sorry for your mother.
TheLostSkeptic your so immature why dont you grow up!?!

do I know you…??
