New season, same Lost

From the first 5 seconds I knew we were screwed this season.  Hurley’s car crashing through a fruit stand?  I was sure the next scene would be the 2 guys carrying the plate glass window across the street. Not only were we screwed by that, but now we go directly into flash forwards.  As if the flash backs for the last 3 years didn’t suck enough.  Hey here’s an idea, let’s find out what’s actually happening now.

It’s amazing how fast the show settled back into its’ previous vices.  Various parties of people trekking through the jungle to nowhere, people that die but don’t really die, bad dialogue, long stares, shaky camera work.  And of course NOTHING HAPPENING.  I really thought with this compressed 8 episode season things were going to start really rocking.  Guess I was wrong again.   And no, they aren’t going to get me to watch some new gay TV series by promising a fake Oceanic commercial.

I’m square in the middle of commercial break #2. I am truly amazed that the writers of this show are so arrogant that they think they can make the first 15 minutes of a season premiere this absent of anything passing as plot…even for Lost this is amazing.

Right, especially when they showed the scene of them talking to the rescuers for THIS episode. Same tricks, different season.

I in no way expected for the rescuers to show up but even Lost has demonstrated an ability in the past to shove just enough of a little something into a 15 minute segment, whether it be a season finale, a return from hiatus, whatever, to make it seem like they are trying to humor us.

Right now I’m sitting at 8:48 meaning 1 more segment and so far this episode has amounted to a typical midseason 3 filler episode.

Like I said, even for Lost, this is pretty amazing out of a season premiere.

Jack: “I’m thinking about growing a beard”

OH MY GOD!!! That is BRILLIANT writing…do you see what they did there? Do you see how they tied this flash-forward with the one from the finale? You know, the one where he had a beard? Did you get that? See how they did that? OMG that is effing brilliant

i thought he should have said “this flash forward comes before the one shown at the end of last season.” the beard comment was just way too elusive.

Well, I really wished I would have posted this last night. I slammed back a six back of Molson Ice before I started to watch the premiere of Lost. I had a lot of completely innapropriate things to post about how shitty the episode was, but now im sobered up and am less fired up. I actually missed the first 5 minutes because I forgot the show was even on. Funny part was when I turned my TV on at 9:06 Lost was allready at a commercial! I chuckled to myself, same shit…different season.

It pains me to say that I am a shell of my former self when it comes to hating Lost. I could go on a tirade about Jack being gay as fuck, the writing being complete shit, kate really starting to look old, and even add something about Hillary Clinton’s Penis…like the good old days. Problem is, I just don’t have it in me. I have gone from hating this show to actually feeling bad for it. I mean, does the show know it sucks? How can the cast and crew take themselves serious at this point. That premiere was pure crap. Sure, the die hards will talk about all the “tie-ins” and all that fucking bullshit, but lets be honest…those dumbass tie-ins are the only thing keeping this show around. It has nothing that could be considered a true plot. And by plot I mean here the traditional definition of plot, not the sophmoric crap that JJ produces. He is so unoriginal in his neo-entertainment originality that I feel bad for all the low IQers who fall for his shit.

I have said for awhile now that it is impossible for anyone who has self-respect to be sucked in by JJ’s crap. He made up the premise, didn’t develop it, was dumbfounded when the show was actually picked up, made up a second season that was for all intents and purposes throw-away, and then started to actually try and develop a plot of sorts during season 3. If you can think back to those times you were suckered in during season one by the tie-ins (that never went anywhere) you would feel ashamed to look in the mirror when you get excited by one of JJ’s crapy tie-ins from season 4.

*uck JJ Abrams
*uck you if you like Lost

well, *uck you, you self-opinionated arrogant bastard. At least repsect that different people like different things. You wanna know why the lost fans shove their opinons down your throat? It’s because, given half a chance, you’d shove your opinions down theirs. In fact, you’re doing in right now, and it really does make you look laughable y’now that?
Don’t like it? Don’t watch it. But then, I don’t suppose you’ve got anything better to do, because, if you did, you’d be out doing something worthwhile, rather than watching an hour of something you depsise just to go and complain about it on the internet.
*sigh* what a sad, sad existance…
And no, I’m not a big fan of this show, but at least I can accept that other people are, and I at least have the mind capacity to respect their opinions.
Oh, and I’m with Steve on this one…

This episode one again had the indie movie crutch of the plot advancing by onlu by miscommunication or lack of coomunication amongst the charachters. The scene where hurly, desmond etc meet with jack and the rest is tottaly unrealistic, they do not attempt to use any logic or explanation besides a bizzare reference to charlie to explain why they think the freighter is bad.

This is a well-stated observation. While this trick is by no means new to Lost (no one has actually communicated clearly with each other for 3 years), it WAS on full display last night.

Besides being mystical, the dialogue was just so forced, strained, unbelievable.

But, what should I expect, (to roughly allude to Dennis Miller) they’re not exactly doing Ibsen on there.

I wouldn’t say the lack of communication/miscommunication is limited to only some episodes; it’s the driving force behind the whole show, not to mention countless other shows and movies. They’re stranded on an island but yet are somehow too busy to ask questions or have discussions about what’s going on. Stranded on an island life is too busy I guess.

Every single situation that happened on this show would be followed by a character telling another, “alright look, listen to me very carefully here is what the fuck is going on and what just happened, it is essential that everyone understands, please ask any any questions if you don’t understand,” or something like that. Asdlkfjal;skdj.

Let’s focus on what we learned.

1. Lost still sucks
2. Six people got off the island (Jack, Kate, Hurley, ???)
3. They’re denying there were any other survivors
4. Charlie got a haircut and cleaned up to be a ghost
5. We’ll have to wait 4 more episodes to learn more crap that they won’t ever answer
6. Apparently the other survivors are either on the island still or were horrifically killed
7. Going with Jack or Locke was not a guarantee of getting off the island
8. Lost still sucks.

SSDS. I can’t believe I was actually duped into thinking I would learn something. Come on JT, you have to admit this was a waste of 60 minutes.

OK, let’s say that everyone else is still on the Island — so what happens if/when Jack comes back? Are they gonna fall down at his feet at his second coming? Won’t they be totally pissed that he sold them out? Why should they trust him? Whether Jack is the self-appointed leader of this motley crew or whether he’s some cocky hot-shot surgeon, or whether he’s some strung-out loser, Jack needs to get over his own whiney little self already.

Here is an idea…stop watching. I seriously don’t understand why people sit down, watch a tv show they know they don’t like, then go onto the internet and talk about how ‘bad’ it was. Some of you may have watched the show since it started and just be disappointed with certain episodes, but most of you actually watch it for the sake of complaining. Its pathetic :|

I’m not saying I don’t get why you don’t enjoy the show, im saying I don’t get why you spend your time watching something you clearly don’t enjoy.

I do expect a load of comments which make false stereotypical views against fans of the show, but you know what, I wont care, because I know there not true.

I guess the Lost fanboys just don’t want to admit they’ve spent dozens of hours watching something that’s stupid. If they have invested their precious time in it then by God it has to be something good – no, great – because otherwise they may not be as smart as they think they are. So even though they can see the emperor’s wang waggling, they can’t say so because they need so badly for him to be wearing those beautiful clothes they’ve been raving about. Reminds me of the Star Trek fanboys who still think Shatner was a great actor on that show. Talk about needing a life…

It’s been 2 years. Can’t ANYONE read the F-ing FAQ?

And it is interesting that Lost has become as Jay said: entertaining only in its ability to be ripped upon.

This may be just another of the many derivative aspects of the show when viewed as a social / marketing experiment. We (this site) in fact may be a “sub-plot” that was anticipated by Abrams et al.

So in the series finale when it was revealed that the show never had a point other than to see how TV can manipulate society, one segment will be devoted to people who watched the show only to criticize it and how that blurs the lines between this group and the people who watched it because they “liked it” – Oh, the philosophical implications. JJ Abrams is a GENIUS…

Dare I interject that there is one thing that I did not find entirely loathsome about this episode? As a season “premiere”, I agree that it reeked. HOWEVER, the suggestion (through the flash-forwards) that some Faustian pact may have been made by the rescued survivors is… um… interesting. This may have been hinted at previously but I was probably not paying attention. As always the most annoying aspects of the epi: (1) nothing moved (except Hurley’s tits) and (2) it has provided yet more fodder for the favoured (Cdn spelling, you goofs) theory that the world of “Lost” is in fact nothing more than Hurley’s psychosis. That particular plot line just burns my ass because it’s just not very compelling, we all know that it will go nowhere and has died and been resurrected several times over the past seasons. Which compells me to pronounce once again that… Yep, you guessed it.

After watching JJ spill his guts to the intelligentsia that haunt TED(dot)com seminars (if that’s not a slam on his audience I don’t know what is-I mean it’s not like he has to worry that they’re watching TED or anything) it’s beyond utterly pointless to debate absolutely ANYTHING in terms of plot and/or explanations. There are none, and JJ made this more than perfectly clear. In his schtick, the mystery IS the point. It’s constant suspense without payoff. He’s obviously trying to one-up Hitchcock. There’s no final shocking twist like old Alfred, there’s only suspense. Although, Chase’s superb “Sopranos” ending beat him to the point of pointlessness.
Nevertheless, seeing the svelte and dapper hobbit wearing too-big designer shades reminded me of an Italian on holiday. He was only missing the obligatory 10cm taller seductress with designer handbag in his arm.
Ah, those lucky Italian boys with their fine-nosed Latin beauties talking too loud and sauntering around without a care.
Anyway, I was at least a trifle bit disappointed to not see the Smoke-beast squatting under the shade of a rubber tree deeply inhaling a cigarette and saying to himself, “What the F&%K (emphasis here) do I do now?”
I guess he’ll make like Jack and pour himself a weak screwdriver and glide around the island wearing a hawaiian shirt.
Oh, but what about the anticlimactic surprise of seeing another mystery guest parachuting his way into a too many character ensemble?
Zzzzzzz
The point of this posting and website, at least for me, is the fun in pointing out the stupidity in others. You know, like when you were a kid and you still had that friend at 12 years of age who still believed that babies were delivered from Paris by stork.
This site is the Red Pill for those still trapped in the fog of Abrams-the Lost people.

2008-02-02 01:33:21

Totally! The thing missing here, is ANY viable explanation. With the “Sopranos” finale we at least had the option of walking away believing one of two things. Either Tony got whacked, or he didn’t. Now JJ seems to have forgotten this in all his brilliance. Nobody would sit down to read ‘War and Peace’ if there wasn’t a resolution-a point to it all. Somebody would say, “You know that book is pointless, it just goes around in circles and NOTHING makes the least bit of sense”. Somebody would warn others by making a website called whywarandpeacesucks(dot)com.
There is no ending, explanation, meaning, lesson, moral to this story. After four years (70+ hours) there doesn’t even exist a viable theory or option, and why? Because JJ doesn’t believe in them! Thousands upon thousands of years of human storytelling culminates in the longest non sequitur ever. Maybe he’s a nihilist and “Lost” is a metaphor for the meaninglessness of life, and like life living and wondering is the point. But no, he’s doing this because he has a magic box that he hasn’t opened in 30 years, and/or he was disappointed after seeing the shark in “Jaws”. Zen doesn’t work with TV.

Comment by Tyler
2008-02-02 14:07:56

I wonder if his disdain for anything with a conclusion leads to other aspects of his life. When Abrams is having sex, does he always pull out right before then end, because the buildup is always better than the final “resolution” of the act?

A show that had over 20 million, finished last season with barely 12, only reason 16 showed up is because they are starved for new programming. When the writer strike ends, it will fall to below 12, bank on it. For someone who loves Lost so much, you sure seem to spend a lot of time here.

whoa i just solved a huge piece of the puzzle. okay when jack says at the end of season 3 to kate “we have to get back on the island!,” he is actually referring to the fact that they have to go back to hawaii to start filming season 4. he wasn’t even talking about the setting in the show. and when kate says no, that’s just because she’s sick of being on such a crap show. the rescuers are sent to hawaii to rescue the actors, so that they can move on to other projects, but ben knows that actually the rescuers will “kill” the losties’ careers because let’s face it, none of these actors has a chance of advancing since they will be losties forever in the eyes of tv viewers.

Comment by Tyler
2008-02-02 13:59:18

Oh definitely. Lost is a career killer for sure. At least for the new people like Kate or Jake who never really did anything before this (save late night hoochie-line commercials). People like Locke will probably be able to continue his anonymous character acting days though.

The actor who played Echo (one of the best characters in the series) should also have interesting opportunities in the future. And if he doesn’t at least he did not disgrace himself. As for Rodriguez, although a decent actress, she was self-destructive even before joining the Lost cast. Other than the hobbit and Rodriguez and maybe Locke who is one of those actors that you recognize but can’t name, let’s not forget that these people were virtually unknown prior to Lost. Their careers were going nowhere fast until Lost and most of them have failed to leverage the exposure afforded by the series. See for example, Vantage Point and other recent crappy films starring Matthew Fox.

“Pity Party of Five”
Jack’s first TV program.
He was a whiner complaining about his drunk brother while taking care of the infant brother every fifth episode.

Just watched the JJAbrams clip from ted(dot)com. My god is that guy full of himself. What he did in that speech PROVES THAT WE ARE ALL RIGHT ABOUT EVERYTHING WE HAVE SAID ABOUT HIM. I have seen famous people give speeches. Most of those that arent self-centered spend the speech telling others how they can excel and get better. JJ talks about how great HE is the whole time. He probably doesn’t know how to make anyone better because he only knows how to start something, not finish it. Look at Lost.
What an arrogant sophmoric asshole. I like how he had that kleenex box ready because he thought it would get him a laugh and like 2 people laughed and he still stopped and made a totally staged face like “why are you laughing at me?” He is so unoriginal in his originality that he can’t even adjust on the fly.
PS. Hitchcock rolled over in his grave when he found out they were hanging his picture up behind JJ while he spoke.

No, and excuse my candor, but it was an experiment to see how many episodes it would take for me to finally find Kerri Russell sufficiently, or somewhat, attractive to qualify as rub-out material (she would flash in towards the end in desperation)
But then JJ changed her hair.

First of all I’d also like to say I really didn’t enjoy the episode. I guess I was still foolish enough to expect something to happen. Second of all I would like send out a big “FUCK YOU” to all the lost fanboys who still find their way over to this website and find the need to criticize people for having any opinion. Get a life you rejects!!

I had a question. When hurley got to Jacob’s cabin and that person looked out through the window and scared the shit out of him.. who was that person? Was it Locke sitting in there with Jacob? Cause it seems like Locke all of a sudden knows everything about the island so what else could be a possiblity? Granted, even if Locke does know something, he won’t tell anybody else until 2 sesons from now so don’t expect too much

Comment by Lmeister
2008-02-04 16:18:01

This is what I saw. I thought there was someone sitting in the chair. I assume that was Jacob. Then, Locke poked his head out as if he was standing by the window or door or whatever Hurley was looking through. I thought there were 2 people in the cabin, and I think it was Locke and Jacob. But I could be wrong. I have only seen the scene once. Perhaps one of the fanboys can better answer the question. They have probably watched it in slow-mo forwards and backwards 50 times by now.

well i rewinded the tivo once to see if they showed anything, and weirdly that Jacob character kind of looked like Jack’s dad sitting in the rocking chair. as far as the guy who looked out of the window at hurley, it was too quick to notice to who it was. it doesn’t really matter anyway

Despite the nay-sayers, I still think that something other than Hurley’s tits will move during the second episode. I prefer not to weigh in on the whole JJ discussion, not because I don’t find it interesting but because I would rather forget that this may be one person’s self-aggrandizing, mastubatory vanity project, which kind of renders any further discussion pointless as suggested by Laurent above. I don’t think this guy is a nihilist. “At least nihilists have an ethos”, to quote the Big Lebowski. In any event, I find it difficult to believe that a single person could be running the whole show. No pun intended.

I’m just glad that Jack finally told Locke that the only thing he’s ever done is blow up anything that matters. I’ve been saying that forever. I can’t understand why no one has killed Locke. You would think that 50+ people would gang up and toss him around a little after the second time he thwarted their plan to get off that damned island.

Any by the way, why hasn’t anyone killed Ben? It can’t be that hard.

The island must have chosen to let Locke survive without a scratch, yet Ben still walks around looking like he just went 9 rounds with Tyson.

I now feel like a tool for taking 30 seconds out of my life to analyze this

“I’m back baaaaby!”

Another sharp stick to the eye! I am now officially just watching Lost so I can make fun of it on this site. My biggest complaint is the usual one: nothing happened. The “flash forwards” are annoying to say the least (Jack to Hurley: “I’m thinking about growing a beard”, ha- get it- cause we know he grows a beard- how fucking clever…). The longer this show drags on the further it gets from its original premise- a bunch of fucked up strangers trapped in a situation that forces them to rethink their lives. Now with the arrival of the “other, other, others” we have lost any sight of that premise. One last barb- who didn’t see the splitting into 2 factions coming? What a twist (not)!!!

I missed you guys (you know who you are!) a lot. I don’t have as much free time online these days (new job: more $, less free time… the price one pays I suppose); but I promise to stop by at least once a week during this strike shortened run of our favorite (heh, heh) show. Talk to you all soon.

Welcome back, Nico. I too will be limited to bashing this show. I leave for 4 weeks of training (Army training, sir!) on Friday so no more whitty banter from me. Ok, no more banter. I hope to be back for week 6 bashing though I return 9 or 10 March, and have to watch 4 back to back episodes in order to get my digs in.

Also, not sure if anyone visits dharmasecrets, but I like to stir things up over there. They’re all wetting themselves on how “great” the episode was and the only dig they have back at me is I defend Heroes (I like it, so what?). Anyway, I’m hoping to be able to rip episode 2, but may not be able to so just in case, Nico, Turkey (eh), JT, Lmeister (Mr & Mrs), et al, tear it up so I can have something to read when I get back.

I JUST HAD A TREMENDOUS REVELATION– OR MAYBE IT IS THE COFFEE

“Cloverfield” is a perfect encapsulation of what “Lost” is all about. No plot, no point, shaky camera work, and it keeps you going until its pointless end.

If any of you lostfanboys out there want a moment of clarity, waste $9 and see cloverfield and spare yourselves the time of watching however many episodes Lost has before it gets canceled.

There is no point to Lost. JJ will probably say “no point” is the point like there is some deep “waiting for Godot” purpose. But no. The point is to get your advertising dollars. c’est tout.

I can’t believe that no one has yet gone off on Naomi, the Jason Voorhees of LOST Islanders. (Or maybe I missed it. If I missed it. My bad. I’ll do my penance over at the *shudder* fuselage)

First, this chick gets a knife thrown into her back, so hard that she’s spitting up blood. Understandably she falls to the ground “dead.” Jack, the mighty surgeon, checks to see if she’s dead by sort of feeling her back. Then she lays there “dead” while everyone has a “we’re going to be saved” picnic and talks about how keen babies are like five feet from a recently deceased corpse with a knife stuck in it like an appetizer. People say a whole bunch of nothing and take too long to say it and then “WHA-OH” she’s gone…

So, we’re then shown that somehow Miss Voorhees has managed to run away without notice, create TWO trails to really befuddle them, shimmy up a tree like a puma, lie in wait for an unsuspecting Lostie to wander by and then is still somehow able to summon the strength necessary to pounce on the always obnoxious Kate, wrestle her, WIN, then hold a knife to her throat. ALL AFTER HAVING BEEN SKEWERED WITH A HUNTING KNIFE.

Of course, the magic of LOST Island runs out just… as… she… makes… her… last… breathless… phone… call… *sigh*

If that wasn’t enough to prove to everyone how asinine this show is at this point… Nothing is.

Great example of just one of the monolithic contrivances in the show’s writing. I liked the show in the beginning, but jeez, how far-out can you go with the whole ’suspension of belief’ type of storytelling. Star Trek was more believable in that characters at least behaved the way that people have throughout human existence. Is Ben supposed to be Satan or something? There is no way in the scope of psycho-sociological understanding that would give any creedence to the ways in which these characters behave towards his character. NOBODY has pulled a ‘Sawyer’ and just gone up to Ben and shot him in his frickin head after all the evil they know he has perpetrated? Come on now, the show is just too nonsensical at this point. And to those who cry, just stop watching it, I have. Why don’t you ‘fans’ just stop visiting and posting on sites that you KNOW are going to be hostile to your opinions? Anyway, to all those who are on this site for the reason it was created, SEMPER FI!
